LBSCR 8-Compartment Third 2403
Steady progress has been maintained in several areas since our last report. Derek Gardener is continuing with re-engineering two new doors for the London end compartment. Whilst Pete Jardine has been repairing the last few external doors which have suffered the ravages of time and succumbed to the elements. John Milddleton has continued with making and fitting the lower body panels and has completed all those on the south side and has just a couple left to make & fit on the north side. As John worked down the coach fitting the panels he was followed up by Pete Jardine who was then able to fit the body mouldings. Derek Atkins has been fitting the communication cord tubing within each compartment and is now working on fitting the mouldings on the country end of the coach and will shortly install the external communication cord mechanism to that end of the coach. Because they are safety critical items Gary Walker, being the one qualified to do so, has been servicing all the door locks and suitably marking them so their history can be officially recorded & tracked.

LBSCR 10-Ton Open 27834
Things have moved on quite well since our last update as will be seen by the associated photographs. Much of the work on the underframe has been completed and attention is now turning to the body work sections of the wagon. The floor timbers have been cut and loosed fitted, however they can not fixed in place yet as this has to wait until the draw gear is repaired and fitted. Mid July saw saw several volunteers & staff in the engineering shop making new steel sections to enable the badly worn draw gear to be repaired and subsequently fitted.

LBSCR Bogie 5-Compartment Brake Third 4168
As will be noted elsewhere on the IWSR website (see link ) 4168 re-entered traffic on the 29 May 2011 (see link for a video as it leaves Havenstreet for the last train of the day to Smallbrook). 4168 had an initial run in period of 28 days it then came back into the C&W sidings to be checked over to ensure that it could continue in service for the rest of the season. As mentioned in my last report I was looking forward to riding in 4168 once it was back in service, I can report it did not disappoint as I had my ride in the afternoon of 29 May 2011. I think that everyone associated with the IWSR should be proud of the standard of workmanship carried out by C&W staff & volunteers in bringing this carriage back into traffic.

SECR 4-compartment Brake Third 4149
The underframe and both bogies have now been fully dismantled, shot blasted and primed. However much dirty work was required between dismantling and shot blasting as years of muck & grime had to be removed by hand, David Saville, Tony Woodfield & Gary Walker spent many a happy hour getting down and dirty! The underframe & bogies will shortly be given another protective coat of paint and the bogies reassembled & refitted to the underframe. This will enable it to be made mobile again but the work will then be on hold whilst suitable sections & sizes of steel are tracked down to enable the underframe to be repaired.

PMV 1046
Work has continued on 1046 since the last update with more rotten sections of body being cut out and replaced. Work is also being carried out on the underframe where it is being systematically de-rusted and repainted. The worn out doughnuts have also been replaced.

LBSCR 8-compartment Composite 6349
In early June 6349 came into C&W to enable the damage caused by the frost during the two recent hard winters to be repaired. It can be seen in one of the associated photographs that this is quite bad in places and just shows what the weather can do to our rolling stock given it spends a lot of time exposed to the elements. The current damage has occurred in just two years since 6349 was last repainted! Hopefully in the not too distant future we'll have the storage facility available and thus help us to prevent such damage which not only takes considerable time to repair but also prevents the staff & volunteers from restoring more of the grounded bodies we have stored. For more details on how you can help us protect our rolling stock please see link.
Many of the body mouldings have been replaced as has one of the metal lower door panels. Once the repairs had been effected the long repaint process commenced. As will be seen by these photographs 6349 will look very different and extremely smart in its new BR red livery when it returns to traffic.

Routine maintenance
During the main running season this entails monthly door lock checks (C exams) plus weekly visual checks and to resolve any defects reported by the operation staff.
In mid July Peter Clowes dusted off his sign writing skills again to freshen up the lettering on the Hocknulls coal wagon (BR 13 ton Open 483700).

We are all very glad to welcome John Garside back to C&W after his recent heart attack, although still not 100% so John has to pace himself but hopefully he'll soon be up to 110%.
Sadly mid July saw the departure from the IWSR of Kevin Colley to the West Somerset Railway, we wish him well in his new job on the north island.
Coming up next
Once 6349 has departed C&W our main task will involve 4149, we'll be spraying the underframe and bogies which will then be reassembled so they can be put back under the underframe to make it mobile again.
Meanwhile the body will be in the workshop into the space vacated by 6349 so a start can be made on its repairs.
We also plan to continue working on PMV 1046, 2403 and it is hoped that shortly 27834 will be finished and thus enable a start to be made on the LBSCR 10T Machinery Truck 60579 (known by some as the cartruck).
It was hoped that by now a start would have been made on striping the body from PMV 1669 as it is the intended donor underframe for the next four wheel coach to be restored by C&W, i.e. LBSCR brake 3rd 4115. However because of various pressures on C&W this has not been possible, but fingers crossed a start will have been made before the C&W update is published.
New volunteers
We'd like to welcome Steph Hollis and Steve Rowntree who have joined C&W as new volunteers since our May report. ALL new volunteers are made very welcome in C&W, we always try and fit your skills or desires with appropriate tasks in C&W and it goes without saying but the more volunteers we have the more restoration and maintenance that can be done to the IWSR rolling stock. So if your interests are in carriages or wagons (we now have a dedicated team for these) and you're are interested in becoming a volunteer then please contact Clive Miller on 01983 882204 or please e-mail Clive on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
